Product Description

The Disana basic jumper.

A lightweight wool jumper by Disana.  Very simple with a classic cut, but unmistakable in its quality and design.  With the basic jumper, Disana shows that Merino wool doesn't always have to be heavy and warm, but also fine and wonderfully lightweight.  It can be worn in rooms with temperature above 68 degrees F, in the classroom, at playschool, or while playing at home.  Yet it also provides a nice protection against dampness and cold when outdoors.

About Disana:

Disana provides clothing free of harmful chemicals and with cuts that support a child's urge to move instead of constricting them.  In addition, with an excellent quality that can be worn a long time and a design that it timeless and still trendy.

Disana sources their Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic merino wool from Patagonia, South America.  Wool with hair diameter of 22 micrometers, soft enough for even baby's skin.  The sheep of the Southern hemisphere, such as Australia, New Zealand and South America, defy the cold, the wind, and the drought of their environment.  For this reason, it is preferred over wool from sheep who live in simply cold and wet conditions in Europe or North America, as the wool from these sheep is not found as appropriate for making as high quality clothing, with the same softness, and being warming yet breathable.

GOTS certification promises high demand regarding ecology, but also social responsibility.  Despite extensive breeding, only 2 sheep come on each hectare of land.  The sheep are only herded together in large size pens when it's time for shearing and being relieved of their winter fur.  It is hard work for both human and animal.  However, no harsh words and no rush.  The farmers work quietly and professionally to keep the animals' stress level as low as possible.  After the shearing, the sheep are brought to another pen, where they're standing closely crowded together.  The sheep are now 4-5 kg lighter than before and keep each other warm this way to prevent a thermal shock.  After some time, they are then back to the pasture.  The heavily criticized 'Mulesing' is not practiced in South America, there is not such concern in Patagonia thanks to a strong permanent wind.  The farms are monitored and certified by accrediting certification institutions according to GOTS.

Disana was the first company to gain the quality label GOTS and the even stricter BEST for their products.  The policies include the strict adherence of environmental and social standards as well as complete transparency for procurement of raw materials and their processing.  This quality label is awarded after a long and extended certification and test procedure.  It labels natural textiles of the highest ecological quality.  Not only the prevention of harmful substances into the yarn's fibre is important to Disana, but also the humans' living conditions and the environment in the country of origin.  Disana feels that they bear responsibility for this as well as for any other subsequent step of the production chain.

When choosing any of their suppliers for other components of their garments, they have trusted long-term partnerships.  Just like Disana, the suppliers that Disana chooses have to play by the rules of IVN and document their actions in detail.  Each process-step, each input material, and each adjuvant is checked to ensure compliance with the guidelines.  The application is monitored and documented.  This process is often very complex and very expensive.  However, this is the only way to ensure that all steps of production satisfy the high demands of technical and ecological quality.  The gained yarn and fabric is exclusively processed at Disana's premises or in selected partner companies directly located in the neighbourhood of Disana.  This allows Disana to monitor and control all production steps.  Many details lead to success then.  Not only yarns and fabrics subject to strict guidelines, but also components and adjuvants such as sewing threads, buttons, and even the knitting machines lubricating oil have to be checked on policy compliance and their use has to be documented.

A respectful and careful dealing with nature is most important for Disana's work.  In a world with global goods movement we have responsibilities beyond the horizon.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Please note that Disana follows the European convention for sizing, where size is denoted by the overall height of the child in centimetres.  This is the height from the bottom of the flexed foot to the top of the head.  Keep in mind that children's height can vary considerably in the same age, so going by height provides a more accurate measure.  Disana tends to fit a little large, so our estimation is:
Size 86/92 typically fits a child from 84 to 100 cm tall (12 - 24 months depending)
Size 98/104 typically fits a child from 96 to 112 cm tall (2-3 years old, depending)
Size 110/116 typically fits a child from 108 cm to 124 cm tall   (4-5 years, depending)
Size 122/128 typically fits a child from 120 cm to 136 cm tall  (6-8 years old, depending)
Size 134/140 typically fits a child from 132 to 148 cm tall  (9-11 years, depending)
